Biography:

Born among the gnarled cypress trees and windswept dunes of Fort Ord (overlooking the Monterey Bay), Joaquin's childhood began with a visceral connection to the area's unique landscape and ethereal light. As a child, his father's career moved the family to Germany where Joaquin was introduced to some of the world's greatest art museums through family road trips to Italy, France, Austria, and Holland. He was deeply inspired by the Old Masters he encountered in the museums and showed promise as an artist from an early age. Joaquin enrolled in private painting classes in Germany, where he fell in love with oil painting and studying the techniques of the Masters. His father's retirement brought the family back to the Monterey area permanently, allowing Joaquin to finish high school in Pacific Grove. Upon discovering the works of the early Monterey Peninsula artists as a teenager, Joaquin was mesmerized by the mystical quality of their work and inspired to paint the local landscape. Years later, his passion for the area has only grown and can be seen in his unique aesthetic, reminiscent of the early artists' spiritual vision, yet completely his own.

In addition to Joaquin's paintings, the gallery features the work of artists who have greatly influenced him - the late 19th/early 20th century Monterey Peninsula and San Francisco Bay Area artists, including Charles Rollo Peters, William Ritschel, Arthur Mathews, William Keith, Armin Hansen, Gottardo Piazzoni, Mary DeNeale Morgan, Francis McComas, and Percy Gray. Continuing in the tradition and ideology of these early artists, Joaquin's work displays a fervent spirituality and deep admiration for the unparalleled beauty of the Monterey Peninsula.
